Who this is for / not for
For: You’re missing a tamper, lost the stock one, or the stock plastic tamper that shipped with your machine feels flimsy and you want a real one.
Not for: You’re looking for a tamper to fix inconsistent shots — that’s almost always a grind or dose problem, not a tamping-force problem. See our pressurized vs non-pressurized baskets page first.
60-second verdict
| If you… | Do this | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Don’t know your basket diameter | Check your machine’s manual or measure the basket rim directly | Sizing varies across brands and even across a single brand’s own lineup — never assume |
| Have the stock plastic tamper and it works | Keep using it | A flat, correctly-sized tamp matters far more than the tamper’s material or weight |
| Want a metal/calibrated tamper as an upgrade | Buy one in your exact confirmed size | A nicer tamper in the wrong size is worse than the stock one in the right size |
Why sizing is the entire decision
A tamper has to sit flush inside the basket with only a hair of clearance — too small and it tamps unevenly against the basket wall (channeling, uneven extraction); too big and it won’t seat in the basket at all. Diameters across the market commonly range from the low 50s up to a 58mm “commercial” standard used on higher-end and prosumer machines, and which size your machine takes depends on the specific model, not the brand as a whole — even machines from the same manufacturer can differ across their own lineup.
Proof this isn’t a “just check the brand” problem: among only the machines this site itself compares, sizes already differ. From each manufacturer’s own product pages and manuals:
| Machine (from our own picks) | Portafilter size |
|---|---|
| Breville Bambino (BES450) | 54mm |
| Breville Bambino Plus (BES500) | 54mm |
| Breville Barista Express (BES870) | 54mm |
| De’Longhi Stilosa (EC260) | 51mm |
Three Breville models share one size, and the De’Longhi in the same under-$300 comparison uses a different one entirely. That’s the whole argument for checking your specific model rather than assuming from brand or price tier — even within four machines on one page of this site, sizing isn’t universal. We haven’t checked the Dedica Arte’s size, so it isn’t in this table. Treat any machine not listed here as unconfirmed until you check its manual.
What actually matters once size is confirmed
- A flat, level base — the single biggest factor in tamp consistency, more than weight or handle material.
- A comfortable handle for your grip — you’ll do this daily; comfort affects whether you tamp consistently, which affects your shots more than the tamper itself.
- Correctly sized, full stop. Weight, handle wood vs metal, and calibrated spring-loaded designs are all secondary to getting the diameter right.
What we refuse on this page
- Sizes for machines we haven’t specifically verified — the table above only includes models we’ve checked against a primary source, not a general size chart pulled from memory.
- Recommending a specific tamper product without a verified size claim to back it.
FAQ
Does a heavier or spring-loaded tamper improve my shots? Not on its own. Consistency of a flat, correctly-sized tamp matters far more than tamper weight or mechanism.
Can I use a slightly-off-size tamper if it’s close? No — “close” still means uneven contact with the basket wall on one side, which is exactly the channeling problem a correct-size tamper prevents.
Where do I find my machine’s exact basket size? Your machine’s manual or manufacturer spec page is the reliable source — don’t guess from a general size chart, since sizing varies by specific model.
