Who this is for / not for
For: You own a burr grinder and have never cleaned it, or you have noticed old, stale-tasting grounds building up.
Not for: Blade grinders, which are cleaned differently, and espresso machines, which need descaling. See descaling and cleaning essentials.
60-second verdict
| Task | How often | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Quick brush of chute and burr area | Regularly, as part of routine | A small dry brush |
| Remove and clean the burrs | Every few months, or more with oily beans | Your manual and a brush |
| Wipe the hopper and exterior | When it looks dirty | A dry or barely damp cloth |
How often depends on how much you grind and how oily your beans are. Treat the schedule as a guide.
Step by step
- Unplug the grinder. Always, before reaching near the burrs.
- Empty the hopper of beans.
- Run it empty briefly to clear loose grounds, if your manual allows.
- Open the burr area following the manual. Many grinders let you lift out the upper burr; some require a screwdriver.
- Brush the burrs, chamber and chute. Stiff dry brushes work well. A vacuum can pick up loose grounds.
- Wipe the hopper and exterior.
- Dry everything and reassemble exactly as the manual shows.
What to avoid
- Water on the burrs or motor. Moisture can cause rust and damage. Keep it dry.
- Unverified shortcuts. Many makers advise against running rice or other foods through a grinder, so check your manual before trying anything unusual.
- Forcing parts. If something does not release, stop and consult the manual.
Some makers sell grinder cleaning products. Whether you use one is up to you; use only what your manual allows.
Why it matters
Leftover grounds and coffee oils can go stale and flavor the next dose. How much that matters depends on your routine; see grinder retention explained. Cleaning also keeps the burr area from clogging.
What we refuse on this page
- A one-size schedule. Frequency depends on beans and use.
- Instructions for specific models we have not handled. Use your manual for disassembly.
Evidence: research synthesis from public cleaning guides and maker documentation; not in-house testing.
FAQ
How often should I clean my grinder? Brush regularly, and do a deeper clean every few months, more often with oily beans or heavy use.
Can I use a vacuum? Yes, for loose grounds, as long as you keep it dry and gentle.
Should I wash the burrs with water? Generally no. Keep them dry unless your manual says otherwise.
Does cleaning change my grind setting? Reassembling correctly should keep it the same, but check after, because a misaligned burr changes results.
