Who this is for / not for
For: You want exactly one machine on the counter, not a machine-plus-grinder stack, and you’re fine with a built-in grinder that’s good enough rather than the best available at the price.
Not for: You already decided you want the strongest possible grinder — our under-$300 page already recommends a Bambino-class machine plus a dedicated Encore ESP grinder as the better-performing stack for close to the same total money.
60-second verdict
| If you… | Do this | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Hate having two boxes on the counter | Barista Express (built-in grinder) | One footprint, one machine to learn |
| Want the best grind quality for the money | Bambino + Encore ESP | Separate grinder outperforms any built-in burr at this price |
| Might upgrade the grinder or machine later without replacing both | Bambino + Encore ESP | Each piece upgrades independently |
| Are buying a gift and want “it does everything” simplicity | Barista Express | Fewer decisions for the recipient to make |
The core trade: Barista Express folds a conical burr grinder into the machine body with 16 grind settings (per Breville’s spec page) — genuinely convenient, but a built-in grinder at this price point is consistently the compromise piece compared to a dedicated grinder bought separately. That’s not a knock on the machine; it’s the same one-box-vs-two-box trade every integrated appliance makes.
How we scored (WhichSetup v3)
We apply Product Scorecard v3. This page scores the Barista Express as a purchase decision relative to the stack we already recommend, not in isolation — its category integrity and demand durability are solid (long-running, well-reviewed model), but “what we can honestly say” is lower here because the grinder-quality trade-off is real and worth naming plainly.
Evidence honesty: Research synthesis (manufacturer specs, long-running public consensus on built-in-grinder trade-offs). Not an in-house lab test.
What we refuse on this page
- Calling the built-in grinder “just as good” as a dedicated burr grinder — it isn’t, and pretending otherwise would undercut our own under-$300 recommendation.
- A sticker price. The Barista Express costs well above our top budget tier, and retail prices move, so check the current price at the link instead of trusting a number we typed.
FAQ
Does the built-in grinder replace a dedicated burr grinder entirely? For most beginners, yes, well enough to start. If taste becomes a priority, the usual path is adding or switching to a dedicated grinder — at which point you’ve effectively rebuilt the Bambino + Encore ESP stack anyway, with the grinder cost already partly spent inside the machine.
Why does our under-$300 page recommend against this as the default pick? Because for close to the same money, a separate machine + grinder stack out-performs the built-in grinder here, and each half can be upgraded on its own timeline.
Is this a bad machine? No — it’s a well-reviewed, long-running model. This page is about who it’s for, not whether it’s good.
Does it use the same portafilter size as the Bambino line? Yes — 54mm, per Breville’s official product page, the same as Bambino and Bambino Plus. The De’Longhi Stilosa is different (51mm), which is why our tamper sizing guide tells you to check your exact machine instead of assuming.
